Architectural Millwork Fabrication in Austin, Texas
Dovetail Custom Wood & Metal fabricates architectural millwork at its 110,000 sq. ft. facility in Del Valle, Texas, near Austin, for commercial projects across the United States. General contractors, architects and owners get casework, wall paneling, ceilings and furniture from one team that also handles engineering, finishing and installation. Dovetail has been building since 2014.

What architectural millwork does Dovetail build?
Dovetail builds custom cabinetry, shelving, storage solutions, furniture, wall paneling (indoor and outdoor), ceilings, leather paneling, mixed media textures and 3D designs. Materials range from plastic laminate to exotic hardwoods. At the Ismaili Centre in Houston, the scope was wood wall paneling and casework packaged room by room, mostly in cherry with prefinished anigre panels and wenge for reveals and edgebanding. At Norton Rose Fulbright, stain-grade wood panels cover walls, window returns and some ceiling areas across floors 9, 10 and 11.
How is millwork engineered before it reaches the shop floor?
Dovetail's engineering and drafting department works in Microvellum, Cabinet Vision, Revit and AutoCAD and builds to AWI standards, from a basic casework model to a complicated phantom wall. Drawings are released in packages that match how the building will be installed. At the Ismaili Centre, drafting was released room by room from mid-2024. At Sixth and Guadalupe, drafting was released by level. Mock-ups come before production: a hotel room prototype, headwall and mini bar at Loren Hotel, and a point-of-sale mockup at the Moody Center.
How does Dovetail finish and install its millwork?
The finishing department includes a mixology lab, three spray booths, a drying area and a quality control checkpoint, and many Ismaili Centre panels were prefinished before they reached the site. Installation starts with Dovetail's delivery crew, supported by three logistical coordinators who work with the project manager, production manager and superintendents. Two superintendents supervise installation. Dovetail's experience modification rate is 0.57, and 100 percent of its field supervisors are OSHA 30 certified.
What does millwork look like on large hotel, venue and residential jobs?
Scale changes how the work is packaged. At the Moody Center, millwork reached five levels, from the Event Level clubs to the 300 Upper Concourse. At Loren Hotel, guest room work covered levels 2 through 7 in pairs of levels, with headboard walls, bed frames, closets, mini bars, desks and vanities. At Linden Residences, kitchens run from Level 11 to Level 27 and vanities from Level 11 to Level 28. Each job was released in pieces rather than in one shipment.
