Dovetail fabricated the architectural millwork and metalwork for The Kitchen Bistro, a restaurant in Austin, Texas, built by general contractor Structure Tone Southwest with architect Michael Hsu Office of Architecture. Dovetail's scope was the Phase II package, and production ran through 2024.
What did Dovetail build at The Kitchen Bistro?
The bar and bar lounge received wall panels, trim, cabinets, shelving and hardwood tops, plus hanging glass racks and foot rail brackets. The dining room got wall panels, battens, beams and trim. The expo alcove, the wine room with its banquettes and shelves, the wine cellar, an office, an IT closet and both restrooms each had their own set of panels, base or shelving.
Materials and finishes
Douglas fir appears by name in the solid wood, slat and trim pieces and in a set of hardwood tops. Red oak hardwood samples were cut to match a veneer. Several panels and base pieces were prefinished from primed MDF. Metal pieces include foot rail brackets, a gallery rail and bar panels. Dovetail's finishing department runs three spray booths.
How was the work delivered?
Metal samples began in February 2024. Samples and mock-ups also included a bar counter-top, a Douglas fir slat panel and a north bar shelf. Drafting produced shop drawings room by room. Main production ran from June through December 2024, ending with a punch repair to a bar slab. A later set of replacement pieces was made in 2025.
